And community colleges also offer an affordable and flexible option for students who plan to pursue a four-year degree. Three community colleges within a half-hour drive of Colorado City include West Texas Community College, Texas State Technical College and Howard College.

    • Universities: High school graduates can go far without leaving the region, with convenient proximity to nearly a dozen four-year institutions, including Angelo State; Abilene Christian University; University of Texas of the Permian Basin; and the powerhouse Texas Tech University, a Carnegie-classified R1 Research University, and the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center.

Healthcare

A three-time winner of the Chartris Top 100 Critical Access Hospital award, the 94-bed Mitchell County Hospital offers a full range of services from Level IV trauma care to general surgery to cardiac rehab and more. Colorado City’s health and wellness services also include the Family Medical Associates Clinic, a 54-bed nursing and rehab facility, a specialty clinic and a wellness center.

Recreation

  • Lake Colorado City State Park: The 1,600-acre Lake Colorado City makes the State Park a favorite destination for watersports like fishing, swimming and paddling, but visitors also enjoy fun on land, like hiking around the lake and camping at campsites or cabins.

  • City parks: Three municipal parks include Fisher Park at Lake Champion which offers camping, boating and a beach for play.

  • Hunting: Plentiful game includes white-tailed deer, quail, dove, duck, geese, javelina, pronghorn, and alligator.
