Classic West Texas history. Vibrant 21st century community.
It had all the hallmarks of a classic western movie: In the early 1880s, a frontier town growing along the banks of the Colorado River became the county seat and came into its own as a bustling rail hub and cattle shipping center rivaling the famed “cow towns” of Dodge City and Abilene. Ranchers drove their massive, lowing herds into Colorado City from hundreds of miles around; cowboys filled the streets, and gunfire occasionally filled the air in this lively crossroads where the inventory of saloons at one point reached nearly 30. By then the town had also built its first school and its first newspaper was in circulation. Colorado City was ready to meet the changes ahead, as the importance of cattle declined and agriculture become a major source of income and then, later still in the 1920s, as oil production became a driver of economic growth.
From a colorful past, a prosperous future emerges.
Today, Colorado City is pioneering new kinds of prosperity: Instead of livestock, trucks travel down I-20 providing rapid delivery to markets across the region and the U.S. Along the interstate, large tracts of available acreage open strategic industrial and commercial opportunity with high visibility and high-capacity electrical infrastructure. The local airport also supports general aviation and boasts the second longest runway in the U.S. Today, we are a diverse city, ready for global challenges and connected to the world through high-speed broadband. With new and superbly equipped academic and sports facilities, our schools rise to the top of the state in performance and graduation rates. Our town’s colorful past is still present in a revived and lively historic downtown, where landmarks and buildings ready for renovation also offer attractive commercial and business opportunity, supported by grants and other incentives from a forward-facing city focused on intelligent and innovative growth.
We’re “booting up” new ways of doing business and creating community against a backdrop of natural West Texas landscape, much of it as unspoiled as it was in the 1880s. Located on Lake Colorado City, Lake Colorado City State Park is one of the area's top recreational resources for boating, camping, bird watching, and all types of water fun. City parks also offer plenty of family fun, featuring playgrounds, pavilions for gathering, and even fishing in some parks. In Colorado City, we are connected to the world, and we’re connected to each other. And here, you and your family and your team will find the right connections to a meaningful future.
